  1. May Decluttering Task ★ The “Microwave Cupboard”

Decluttering in the kitchen - the Flying Drunken Monkey

This post has been sitting in my drafts folder for ages and I keep moving it back in my schedule. I have no idea why I keep putting it off (it’s such a simple post about decluttering!) but I decided to bite the bullet and get it up today! So here goes!!

Part of May’s Decluttering Zone was to declutter the “microwave cupboard” (so called as it has the microwave in it. I know! So imaginative!) It seemed like such a big job that I had put it off for ages.

One day when Mr Monkey was home I decided it was about time we got it done. The photo above is the “before” photo. It wasn’t too bad but I didn’t like the way everything was piled on top and the right hand side of the second shelf was a mess with a lot of stuff that we don’t use. I was also hoping to get some of the bigger stuff on the bottom organised (which you can’t see in the above photo).

So, this is halfway through. Unfortunately, Mr Monkey got called out to help his Sous Chef who’s car had broken down and I wasn’t able to do much more without his help. As you can see we moved all of the glasses up on to the top shelf, got rid of a few mugs and moved the remainder on to the 2nd shelf. We also started moving my tea stuff on to that shelf instead of on the kitchen bench.

Once Mr Monkey got home we kept going. You can see the rest of my tea stuff on the second shelf (there is now more on there plus my coffee stuff, a lot of it from T2!). Next to the microwave is things such as the grater and other small implements. Next shelf has salad bowls and other crockery dishes.

The bottom shelf has all of our appliances that we don’t use every day – blender, slow cooker, food processer, pasta machine, scales.

On top of the cupboard is our wooden tray and the bento lunch boxes that we really must use more. There is also a few cupcake trays up there now.

So, it’s not perfect but it’s much more organised and easier to use and keep tidy.

Do you have a similar cupboard in your kitchen that has always needed decluttering? I’d love to hear if you have cleared it out!

By the way, how horrible is the lighting in our kitchen! I hate how the colour of the light and the paint on the walls turns everything yellow at night time. One of the downfalls of renting I suppose!

  2. May Decluttering Task ★ Under the Kitchen Sink

This month’s Decluttering Zone is the Kitchen so I decided to attack the cupboard under the sink. The above photo is the before photo. I can’t remember the last time I cleared out this cupboard.

There is all of the cleaning stuff, extra bottles of soft drink, millions of plastic bags from before we got our “green” bags, and so many bottles of alcohol – both full and half empty. I had always put this job off as it was a bit scary. I didn’t really know what I was going to find in there.

So I started on the top shelf and started pulling things out. I organised all of the plastic bags in to one bigger bag – we’ll try to use these for something at some stage. I got rid of cleaning products that were almost empty or that we really no longer use. I reorganised everything so it was a bit more organised, with the cleaning products on the right and the soft drinks on the left.

It’s not perfect, it’s hard to get to things at the back but it will do for the moment. I will probably try to get some baskets to organise it a bit more later.

I then took a big breath and started on the second shelf. I would’ve preferred to do this when Mr Monkey was home as these are mostly his bottles but I didn’t want to wait until he was home from work. So I rearranged the bottles so it was a bit tidier and I will get him to go through them soon.

Do you have a scary cupboard under the kitchen sink as well? Could it use a bit of decluttering? I’d love to see your before and after photos!
